Spill barriers
Oil spill containment booms.
They are the first line of defense in pollution response operations, whether it is a spill in a port, offshore near a sensitive area, or on the high seas.
There are three main technical characteristics to take into account when choosing a containment barrier: buoyancy, sway and vertical oscillation.
Buoyancy
It is important to maintain an adequate freeboard height in adverse conditions. It depends directly on the volume of the barrier.
Balancing
It is the angular rotation with respect to the vertical caused by wind, current or waves.
A high roll angle reduces the effective freeboard height and draft of the boom, resulting in inferior protection.
Vertical Oscillation
It indicates the response of the barrier to waves and is proportional to the area of the barrier in the plane of the water surface.
A barrier with a slow vertical oscillation may be sunk by a passing wave. However, a barrier with a fast vertical oscillation will float above the wave.
